Hachiko was brought to Tokyo in 1924 by his owner, a college professor named Hidesamuro Ueno. Each day, when Ueno left for work, Hachiko would stand by the door to watch him go. When the professor came home at 4 o’clock, Hachiko would go to the Shibuya Station to meet him. he following year, Ueno died of a stroke while at the university. Hachiko didn’t realize that he was gone, and so the dog returned to the train station every single day to await his master.
Hachiko died in 1935, after 10 long years of waiting for his master.

On Christmas Day in 1914, German and British troops held a temporary ceasefire known as the 'Christmas Truce'. Both sides sang carols, exchanged Christmas greetings and gifts, and there are even stories of soccer matches taking place. In the above photo, German troops decorate a tree in their trench.

The father of a two-year-old Chinese boy have taken to desperate measures to keep him safe — padlocking him to a lamp post. Rickshaw driver Chen Chuanliu chained his son Lao Lu to the post while he picked up customers because he feared kidnappers would steal the boy. Chen's four year-old daughter was stolen earlier last month. His wife was unable to care for Lao Lu because she was mentally disabled.

The Oka Crisis was a land dispute between a group of Mohawk people and the town of Oka, Quebec, Canada which began on July 11, 1990. It lasted until September 26, 1990. At least one person died as a result. The dispute was the first of a number of well-publicized conflicts between First Nations and the Canadian government in the late 20th century which were associated with violence.
