If you're a newcomer, your build depends on what you like to play. Example; if you like to play team matches or megas (5x5 games in Junkyard), then you need long-range weapons. Such as sniper-rifles, machine guns, etc. 1v1 type matches - Thumper, Milkor, Grenades, Ak47s, etc.
Doctors are good too. Doctors are units that can heal your allies/yourself by walking next to the designated target. If you go with explosive weapons, you need to read this "Dispersion Guide". 9 times out of 10, you will mess up your first account's build (skills/perks). I recommend you play up to level 20 and see what weapons you like to use, then make a new one and start over. You will be more experienced, and not screw up your perks/skills. That program should help you very well.
Here is a starter build:
Unit 1: RPK line weapons (machine guns - M6), MG4, etc.) These are very easy to use, but can be tricky getting a good shot in. Melee line weapons (baseball bat, hunter knife, poisoned knife, pipe, etc.) Melee weapons can acquire perks that give you "more APs". You start out with 12. There is a perk called "Endurance" that you later can acquire that gives you 3 more movement action points (you can only move with these), and takes away one action point. This is the best combination with a Machine gun unit.
Unit 2: I suggest you start out with an explosive unit so you can get use to hitting well with explosives. Later in your Gunrox career you will be using these. I suggest a Grenade unit with SMGs on the side. (refer to Dispersion Guide)
Unit 3: Doctor unit that can heal you. Doctor units are best with Sniper or Assault Rifles.
This is only a starter build that can be very effective in a lot of ways. Sort of noobish, but can be used well. Cheap, effective, and easy to use.
Good luck in your Gunrox career! You should really talk to a veteran, they are best with suggesting builds.
