Are these QOL updates paving a road forward?

Reply

I’ve been keeping up-to date regarding the development process of Gunrox, network reconfiguring, and re-balancing; these updates affect stability and with Linux based server hosting... is it apart of a roadmap strategy to bring people to the game, create a new game from the bones of the original gunrox, or as a cost effective way to reduce upkeep costs? This game is over 10 years old now and there is still a dedicated player base wishing it succeeds, me included.

I know when gunrox 2 was announced it was more or less a teaser with art assets, and the war plaguing Ukraine has had a massive impact over the region, but as it concerns game development - is there a planned path forward? It seems that the inclusion of mobile devices, ‘loot boxes’, and network being redone are leading to something beyond the scope of Gunrox. Whether or not it’s a sequel or a brand new game with similar elements, I’d like to be informed on where it goes from here... a roadmap of sorts.

I’ve been following this game since I was a kid who hadn’t even hit puberty, and 15 years later I still wish to see it succeed. Following updates every other week gives me insight into ‘the fight to keep it alive’, but I don’t see anything more than that. Wish I did.

I gave up on bringing new people into the game - I have tried everything, advertisement, partnerships, etc. Nothing works in this day and age. The players we have here mostly were driven in by Flash games, now as flash games are long gone, there is no way to reasonably bring new players into such a niche games. No advertisement recoups it's investment, because the game is very niche.

We've ported the game to web to make it work on all platforms and it game the game a second breath, but that's about it. Bots were added so that new players will have someone to fight with and stick around until they will start meeting real players on a regular basis, but that was not enough to bring general audience. In current overcrowded game market it is very hard.

Linux server, connection and tech updates are made to sustain the game being up and running for the next decade and to cut costs too. Lower costs = less income required from the game to keep the servers running.

GUNROX 2 was mean to be developed on a different engine to allow multi-platform, but since we have managed to port GUNROX 1 to web browser, making GUNROX 2 does not make much sense, but is actually harmful, because it will split already small player base in half.

Hello Yaroslav, I have been aware of the Gunrox news for a long time, the truth is I always liked the game and I think it can have more players with good publicity.
I currently work in that and I want to present myself as a second possible opportunity for your game to succeed. The only problem is that I don't know English and that makes it difficult to communicate with you. Maybe I'm the only one in your community who can reflect the passion and adrenaline that can be felt in a game and make it go viral. However, advertising requires research, creativity and investment. I can bring you a Spanish speaking audience and then from people who speak English.
Well, if you need my help, answer me and we can reach an agreement, I know that if Gunrox revives it will be a great financial gain for you and also for players who have been making content on YouTube for years and do not have enough audience to meet the monetization requirements. Hi, I remembered this post and wanted to bring up something related to my other post. Since you already talked about the reality of GUNROX 2 here, I thought it’s easier to mention it in this thread.

Would you consider rebranding Gunrox to Gunrox 2 and expanding the current weapons and perks, if players were willing to sponsor it?

Like you said, the game is very niche, and from a business point of view it probably doesn’t make sense for you to spend a lot of time making big updates. But maybe a smaller expansion to the current game could work if the community helps support it.

For example, things like:

  • Buffing or reworking weaker guns like Rainmaker, Plasma Grenade, and Pulsator so they become viable.
  • Adding more 120-skill weapons so late-game builds feel more fresh.
  • Expanding perk trees so builds aren’t as “solved” as they are now.
  • Adding multiple final perks per tree, so players can choose different endgame options.
For example, Doctor currently ends with the 20 HP / 2 HP regen perk. Another option could be something like removing a certain number of status effects from a unit once per game, or the long forgotten idea of allowing final tank to once per game to trade hp for removing stun/ flashes)

You could also add new perk trees that add some depth without changing the core gameplay.
For example an Engineer tree, where you could place one cover per game, which might help in Megas on very open maps.

The main idea is just to bring some fresh air into the game. Right now most players have already explored the majority of builds and combinations. The recent mines buff and melee perk nerf helped change the meta but since theres not that many options currently, perhaps adding new weapons and perks people would experiment again and it would probably lead to more resets and more variry in games.

Maybe there could also be optional ways for players to support the game in meaningful way like:

  • A subscription option (for example $30 for 6 months) that gives something like extra unit loadout slots which is heavily sought after.
  • Community-supported updates where players help fund specific expansions.

As Art games are even more niche and is limited to 10 players nowadays gunrox needs more financial lifelines. While im at it, the free boxs recieved from charging should be adjusted to give items that the players units use. Currently they flod the inventory and are typically thrown away.

I think the player base understands that the game is niche. Even though people may be toxic a lot in chat, the reality is everyone here loves the game, otherwise they wouldn’t still be playing it more than 10 years later.

Thanks again for taking time to read it, apologies if some parts are repeated from my other post.
