That symbol next to your name is more than cosmetic, it's an indicator as to your strength and experience. I bet you're wondering how that little indicator works too... well, here's some intel for you.
Quitting is for "Deserters": The worst thing you can do for your rank is to quit out of games. Every time you do so lowers your rank. Believe it or not... the "Recruit" rank isn't the lowest of rankings in Gunrox. Eventually, you can get the "Deserter" from numerous games quit out of with units alive. The only way to keep your rank up is to finish your games!
Damaging your foe is the key: As you do more damage to your target(s), your ranking score will improve behind the scenes. Taking damage does not lower your ranking score. It'll take a long time to boost your ranking by one notch on the ladder, but it's well worth it.
K/D ratio isn't just for the First Person Shooter: Another element to keep a close eye on is the units killed and units lost ratio. The more units you kill, the better your ranking score. Losing units does not lower your ranking score. Obviously, it's better to play in bigger games with more targets to kill, but there are more targets out to get your troops too!
Winning isn't everything: Winning a game will definitely help your ranking score, yet losing only costs your ranking score earned for that match to be cut by a percentage. Losing a match does not lower your rank for any reason! So keep playing, and watch that ranking go even higher.
Clearing the quit counter: In case you were unfortunate enough to have quit out of games in the past and want to get onto a clean slate, there's something in the Cash Shop you should be looking into. The Clear Quit Counter feature will literally wipe the slate clean for you! It'll also remove that ugly "Deserter" rank if that's your current rank.

all this is very helpful info :)
i disagree with the "losing doesnt make your rank drop" part though, if my w/d ratio becomes example: 20/0 i am sergeant first class, but when it would become 20/1 i drop to staff sergeant.
whether this is due to my dmg ratio, i wouldnt know i dont look at that much :)
anyway nice info homerndrby1! :D

It could have been a loss AND a disconnect (quit) that did that... you are not telling us how many quits you had before and after either :)

If you get DC'd by your connection unintentionally... it doesn't register on the stats as a quit. If you pull the cable out of the wall... that's another story. My connection drops on me at random, makes me want 2 pull my hair out!
It'll take a long time to boost your ranking by one notch on the ladder, but it's well worth it.
What does ranking matter? Only thing I have noticed it to do is that less people want to play against you if you have higher rank.

i have made a thread about quitting by disconnection before, but thats a lost cause now lol
so i'll just state this:
i have never quit, not even from DC because i know how to prevent DC :)
thankfully its kept me going thru loads of big group battles, though i annoys all the people i play with lol :D
finally master serg to, almost on the top 100 now :)

Basically it tells other people about your skill and game behaviour. If level shows how much you play, then rank shows how good you are. If you are a private at level 20 then probably you are badly skilled player or a deserter.

unfortunately, i dont know anything about those 3 things you mentioned, im not that good into IT :o
to bad my old thread on prevnting DC is a lost cause now lol :)
but ill share it here anyway =)
to prevent DC: simply "say" nothing (a.k.a hit space bar then enter) when you think your about to DC not when you are DC (basically interact more :) ) well every time i DC its not even for 10 mins i get back on pretty fast its just very irritating  ... i know i know sounds like it will never work, probably wont for you =) but works 90% for me (doesnt work 100% sometimes i am almost already DC and speech does not work at all for my char)

I understand that, but the op said "it's well worth it" to get it higher, and I don't understand what would you benefit for having high rank. I think its the opposite.

late if thats true why are you lieutenant? :)
if your gonna follow what you say here on forums more, you should quit more to lol :D

Well yeah, it has crossed my mind to lose on purpose to get the ranking lower to appear less intimidating to potential opponents. But there are some things that prevent it:
1) I like to win
2) Its not allowed. Fake fighting yields bans and I dont like bans.
3) It wouldnt help now anyway because there are so little 20+ lvl players that they all know each others perks and skills and way of playing anyway. So not much use trying to appear something else than what you are.
And so still the question remains: what good do you get for getting higher rank? Well I guess I should feel I accomplised something being among the 15 or so best players in a server. In reality the only thing I accomplished so far is avoid doing homework :D

let me lit some thing about deserters:
not all deserters are bad players.
for example i have 3 accounts and all are deserters.
and everyone want play sometimes with deserters
cause they think they are bad players.:=)
i dont blame them for this but the smile when they lost their fight
the mighty ranked teams and or with arts or full armed.:=)
that s why its worth to be a deserter:=)

I will be first deserter 50 lv soon:)
Maybe later i will create a clan exclusively for deserters.

Or you could stop quitting games every time the going gets tough.

i saw many deserters that they play better than a major general like dr paulo or valtorn

I have quit games about 6 or 7 times since i started playing this account.... but it doesn't show.......
i like to quit when my enemy uses arts against me.... if i kill one of their units.. and their turn is about to end on some other turn.... i quit so they cant pick up:) do the same !! hehe
i guess if you quit like once every couple of weeks the game forgives you....

supposedly valtron quits in the beginning of the game to abort if he does not like the map........ i guess i would do the same but i care about my rank and win/loss ratio
realistic goal it to keep it at 4:1
