There is no difference in container color, it's just there to provide some more color in the game worlds. Also, the option to "challenge" another player does seem interesting... then again, you can use the private message system to arrange something like that (use the CTRL and SHIFT keys when sending chat messages, CTRL opens the medium, SHIFT is for responses).
