When you level up, you get one point to spend on a perk, and five points to use on weapon skills. While the points may not do much early on, they add up in a hurry! Then there's that infernal question... what are you going to boost? This is a detailed breakdown of what you get for boosting each area.

Note that all areas (save the healing skill) boost minimum and maximum damage, so those stats are omitted. (Critical Rate is now irrelevant since June 15 Update)

Melee: Accuracy
Pistols: Accuracy, Maximum Range
Shotguns: Accuracy, Maximum Range
SMGs: Accuracy
Assault Rifles: Accuracy
Sniper Rifles: Accuracy, Minimum Range, Maximum Range
Grenades: Dispersion (Accuracy), Maximum Range
Rocket Launchers: Dispersion (Accuracy), Minimum Range
Machine Guns: Accuracy
Traps: Damage and Critical Rate Only
Healing: Healing Power of Medi-Kits

Also, boosting skills will change your starting weapon when you start a game with no items!!

(* indicates a secondary weapon. You can start with one primary and one secondary weapon.)

What if I choose two primary weapons? Which one will I actually get when unequipped?

When you have 2 primary you'll get the highest, when the same you get a random one of the two

The best ( i think ) is to have one primary and perhaps 2 or 3 secondary
For example : starting with an Assault rifle + Medi-kits + Pistol

Ok thanks!
Only one of my characters have two primary weapons, so this should be no problem!
